BUCKLAND TOUT-SAINTS, near Kingsbridge, Devon

Buckland Tout-Saints gets the latter part of its name from the Toutsaints family, who held the original manor in 1238. The present house was built in around 1690, during the reign of William and Mary. Two hundred years later, considerable alterations were made – one of which was to fill in the courtyard formed by its original U-shape, creating a square building. A new front door was also put in place: it said to have come from Carfax Church in Oxford, which was demolished in 1889, along with the panelling in the staircase hall, and the overmantel and panelling in the bar. In the dining room, however, the original 17th-Century panelling remains, as do some ceilings and cornices.
It continued to be a family home for more than 250 years, first becoming a hotel in 1956. Recently, it was refurbished and restyled throughout.
