ARLBERG HOSPIZ HOTEL, St Christoph, Tirol

THE PAST:

The original meaning of the word hospiz was ‘refuge and hospitality for the traveller’ – and therein lie the origins of the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel. The story begins over 600 years ago, in 1386, when the first Arlberg-Hospiz and its chapel were built by a foundling called Heinrich, who worked as a swineherd. Heinrich often roamed with his animals over the Arlberg massif and knew its dangers well. He felt he could no longer stand idly by as countless people met with accidents, starved or froze to death in blizzards and storms as they crossed the mountains on foot. In 1385, on a visit to the area, Duke Leopold III of Austria gave Heinrich a piece of land up on the Arlberg Pass, and it was here that he established the first Hospiz refuge. In order to collect the funds needed for his work, Heinrich also founded, with the approval of Pope Boniface IX, the Brotherhood of St. Christoph. This Christian charity’s Coat of Arms - the lamb of God, the Cross of Constance and three small crosses symbolising faith, hope and love – can be seen next to the entrance of the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel. Even during their first winter, Heinrich and his helpers were able to save seven people from certain death in the snow, and give them food, drink and a bed for the night.
Six centuries later, after the construction of the Arlberg railroad tunnel in 1884, the number of people risking the perilous journey over the mountain dwindled, and the hospice fell into disrepair. The provincial governor, Carl Ganahl, had the ancient building listed as an historic monument, and appointed a watchman for its protection. In 1955, his great-grandson, Arnold Ganahl bought the old Hospiz Inn and began an extensive restoration. Eighteen months later, in a fire caused by an electrical fault, the inn and chapel were burnt to the ground. Undaunted, Arnold Ganahl had it rebuilt - with a steep roof, in traditional style, but also with a bath, shower and toilet for each bedroom. The smartest and most modern hotel on the Arlberg, it opened as the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel at Christmas 1959.
In 1964 Adolf Werner and his wife Gerda, the daughter of Arnold Ganahl, took over the management of the Arlberg Hospiz. Their son Florian has run the hotel as manager since 1997.

THE BROTHERHOOD OF ST CHRISTOPH...
...is the world’s oldest charitable association, and still operates today, offering assistance and support to Austrian children and families of children who, through no fault of their own, have fallen upon hard times. To find out more, or to make a contribution visit their website.

THE PRESENT:

What was once a humble mountain refuge is now a multi-award-winning, luxury hotel - open only in the winter season, from late November until late April - where rustic charm meets modern design, where antiques meet cutting-edge, contemporary art and sculpture - and where legendary hospitality is still a tradition. Respect for the past is balanced by regard for the present and future, as demonstrated by the opening of the Hospiz Gallery, in December 2008, by manager Florian Werner – who is himself an artist. A centre for the arts at the hotel and an outlet for modern art in Austria, it features works by both established artists and newcomers. An ‘Artist in Residence’ project, whereby artists can live and work at the hotel for an entire week in winter, permits guests to watch the creative work in progress.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

At 1800m above sea level, St Christoph, above Lech in the Arlberg, is a natural paradise for winter sports. The Arlberg Hospiz Hotel’s excellent spa ensures that it is also a health-and-beauty heaven, while its first-rate restaurants are a gourmet diner’s delight. Outstanding childcare facilities make this the perfect hotel for a happy family holiday, too.
The newest feature of the Arlberg1800 Resort is its Kunsthalle Arlberg1800 - a strikingly modern, high-altitude art and concert hall.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

RELAXING
There's nowhere more inviting, especially on a cold day, than the cosy fireside bar - and few fireplaces anywhere are as big as this one! In the evenings, a resident pianist plays.

EATING & DRINKING
First thing in the morning, a superb breakfast buffet awaits. As you enjoy it, you can check the weather forecast and snow conditions in the Hospiz daily newsletter, as well as the hotel's event programme, meal-times and menu specialities for the day
There are three gourmet restaurants where traditional food with a modern twist, classics re-interpreted, feature on the menus.
The candlelit Tyrolean Restaurant has a typically Austrian ambience, musical accompaniment and cuisine. Wood panelling and comfortably upholstered seating set the scene at the elegant Hotel Restaurant Hospiz. The award-winning Skiclub Stube offers nouvelle cuisine.
A 'dine-around' option means guests can also enjoy gourmet meals in a delightfully rustic, fireside setting at the hotel's exclusive sister ski lodge - Hospiz Alm - nearby. There is also an outdoor sun terrace there where meals may be served.
Beneath the hotel lies the 620-year-old Brotherhood’s Wine Cellar, where an award-winning assortment of the best the world can offer is stored – including what is probably its largest private collection of Burgundy and Bordeaux wines. At 12- to 18-litres, many of the bottles are very large, too: Hospiz Hotels & Restaurants famously request many of their suppliers to fill these - in the tradition of Russian royalty, and to ensure optimal ripening. A candlelit wine-tasting in these ancient and atmospheric stone-hewn, brick-lined vaults is an memorable occasion.
