CASTELLO di VICARELLO, near Grosseto, Tuscany

Perched on a hilltop, with distant views – on a clear day - of the sea, Castello di Vicarello would have been a fortress of some importance in the early 1100s, when it was built. When Aurora and Carlo Baccheschi Berti bought it as a summer retreat, it was ruin and there were cows inside. Little by little, they rescued it and made it a holiday home where they entertained family and friends. In the 1990s, they decided to extend their warm brand of hospitality to paying guests, and the Castello became a hotel.

With its unique and charming blend of rustic luxury, that hotel has since won many awards, and earned countless accolades. Yet, despite its transformation, echoes of the past are ever-present, and Castello di Vicarello retains its ancient grace and timeless tranquillity. It has, as well, a magnificent sense of place. Surrounded by gardens filled with with flowers and fragrance, terraced olive groves, orderly vineyards, acres of unspoilt forest, it rises like a fairytale tower from a billowing quilt of undulating hills.

This hotel is the perfect choice for an escapist getaway far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, or for a spa break. It will also suit those with a love of fine food and wine, and organic produce – with the option of Tuscan-kitchen cookery classes. And, with Siena, Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano within driving distance, it also makes a good base for a touring holiday in southern Tuscany. (Scroll down to end for GETTING THERE details.)

Castello di Vicarello is licensed to perform civil wedding ceremonies, and is also available for exclusive-use bookings and can accommodate 14 people, if rooms are shared, or a maximum of 20 with the use of extra beds.

There is a comfortable library in the main building; all suites have spacious living rooms, most with fireplaces, and there is also ample outdoor seating in the courtyard, gardens and pool area. In winter, fires are lit to create a warm welcome. In summer, sea breezes refresh the outdoor areas.

Food is a passion at Castello di Vicarello. Guests enjoy Tuscan meals, based on local and seasonal ingredients, using herbs and vegetables grown organically in the kitchen garden of the Castello - which also produces its own olive oil and wine.
Meals are served house-party style – indoors in winter and in the candle-lit courtyard in summer - with private tables available on request. (During aperitif and dinner time, guests are requested to please respect a smart casual dress code.)
The kitchen is always open to guests, who are welcome to watch - and perhaps get an impromptu lesson.
Tailor-made cooking classes, hosted by Aurora Baccheschi-Berti, the owner of Castello di Vicarello, or her head chef, are offered in the 11th-Century kitchen. Guests can elect to create a menu - usually consisting of an entrée, a first course, a main course and a dessert - or learn how to make fresh pasta, breads and focaccia. Recipes chosen for the classes are based on Aurora's internationally acclaimed, inaugural cookbook: My Tuscan Kitchen - which is available for purchase at the Castello, or from Amazon.
Please use the Make an Enquiry button to request further information, or to give advance notice of your interest in cooking classes, so that a seasonal menu, based on your tastes and needs, can be planned.

As well, guests can take a private tour of Castello di Vicarello's vineyard and enjoy a wine-tasting. Encircling the castle and rolling odwn towards the Macchia Mediterranea woodland, the vineyard presents a panoramic landscape. Both the original vineyards and the new, experimental vines are explored on this tour, hosted by owner Carlo Baccheschi-Berti or his assistant, and guests will be guided through the various processes which have led to the production of the award-winning Vicarello wines. Tasting takes place in one of the castle's medieval kitchens, and will feature two or three wines, served with selected products such as wild boar salami, prosciutto and pecorino cheese.
